What type of masks protect you against Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Due to pandemic Coronavirus, the world has been facing a shortage of masks and other protective equipment. Wearing a mask is not so sure thing that it will protect you against the virus as the virus is very small in size and can transmit through eyes and tiny viral particles, known as aerosols. But using the right mask and knowing the right way to wear it can capture the tiny droplets which is the main transmission route of the virus.

If you are in close contact with someone who is infected, wearing a mask decreases the chance to catch a virus. Furthermore, if you are showing symptoms of coronavirus, wear masks immediately as it can protect others. So, masks are crucial for health and social care workers.

There are many types of masks available in the market, but one doesn’t know which mask works in protecting you against the virus.

Following is the list of some masks which can protect you against Coronavirus:

N95 Respirators

Strongest Protection

N95 respirators have 2 advantages over simple cloth or surgical masks; they are 95% efficient at filtering 0.3-μm particles (smaller than the 5-μm size of large droplets—created during talking, coughing, and sneezing—which usually transmit influenza) and are fit tested to ensure that infectious droplets and particles do not leak around the mask. N95 fit offers advantages over a loose-fitting surgical mask by eliminating leakage around the mask. It provides a high rate of protection against Coronavirus. The durability of the mask is not specific for it, but once the mask is contaminated by any secretion or droplet, it shouldn’t be taken in use again.

Surgical Mask

Medical Use

The surgical mask also offers a high rate of protection from COVID-19 with an efficiency of 95%. The surgical mask protects the patient and his or her environment mainly in case of fomites. If worn by a contagious patient, it prevents the patient from contaminating his or her surroundings and environment. The most beneficial point of using a surgical mask is that it is easily available and is cheap. But the thing which should be kept in mind Is that this mask should not be worn for more than 3 to 8 hours.

Isolate Suspended Particles

FFP1 refers to the “filtering facepiece 1” with an aerosol filtration of at least 95% and leakage to the inside of a maximum of 22%. This mask is mainly used as a dust mask (home renovations and various types of work). This mask also provides high filtration levels and protection against Coronavirus. It can also be used as long as there is no damage which can be observe in the mask.

Activate Carbon

Stop Odor

Activate Carbon provide very low-level protection against Coronavirus. It is mainly used to protect one from strong odors. This mask is therefore of no use if you are wearing it for the sake of protection.

Cloth Mask
